If you’ve seen photos of endless lavender fields stretching under blue skies, chances are they were taken in Valensole. This plateau in southeastern France is the epicenter of Provence’s lavender season, drawing travelers, creatives, and nature lovers from around the world. Here’s everything you need to know for an unforgettable visit.

Why Valensole?

More than a picturesque backdrop, Valensole is the beating heart of Provence’s lavender culture. With its altitude, sun exposure and sweeping plateaus, it offers the most cinematic lavender landscapes in France and the most immersive. This isn’t just where lavender grows. It’s where it becomes an experience.

A Backdrop Designed by Nature

What makes Valensole unique isn’t just its lavender, it’s the way it grows. Rows are precise, shadows are graphic, and the colors shift from pastel to saturated violet depending on the hour. The light sculpts the landscape as much as the land itself.

When to Visit

  • Peak bloom: typically June 25 – July 10
  • For calm and soft light: 6am to 9am
  • For golden hues and cinematic flare: 7pm to sunset (9pm)
  • Fields are often harvested from mid-July, don’t come too late

Getting There

Fly into Marseille or Nice, rent a car, and drive into the heart of Haute-Provence. The plateau is about 1h15 from Aix-en-Provence. There are no train stations nearby. And that’s part of the charm.
For the best views:

  • Stop at Lavandes Angelvin around golden hour: the light is warm, the air still,
and the fields glow like velvet.
  • Head to Route de Puimoisson (D56) at sunrise. The silver light brings out every texture.
  • Explore Chemin des Grandes Marges for quieter fields and a more intimate experience.

What to Pack

  • Light, neutral clothes (for photos)
  • Comfortable shoes. Many fields are dusty and uneven
  • Sunscreen, water, sunglasses
  • Camera gear: wide angle, portrait lens, ND filter for sunset shots

Bonus Tips

  • Don’t walk between the rows! Farmers rely on each plant
  • Visit a distillery to understand the full process (Angelvin, Bleu Provence)
  • Buy directly from local artisans: soaps, honey, essential oils
  • Avoid weekends if possible, early weekdays are quieter
